The oriental collection comprises original literature from the regions of Northern Africa, Near and Middle East, Central and Southern Asia, as well as Hungary, Armenia and the Georgian Republic;
literature in the Arabic, Armenian, Georgian, Hebrew, Yiddish, Mongolian, Persian, Tibetan, Turkish and Indian languages.
The acquisition of materials in the original languages focuses on the field of humanities as area of collection emphasis: philosophy, religion (Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Christian Orient), history, archaeology, philology and literature, music, architecture and the fine arts, as well as editions of classical texts.
The BSB also collects the corresponding secondary literature in Western European languages.
Works in oriental languages are catalogued in the  OPACplus in a transliterated form.
