Cooperation with the Technical University of Munich (TUM)
Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann and Dr. Rolf Griebel signing the cooperation agreement
On 17 May 2010 Prof. Wolfgang A. Herrmann, President of the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Dr. Rolf Griebel, Director General of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, signed a cooperation agreement to ensure that Munich will remain one of the prime locations for the training of book and paper restorers also in the future.
As part of this cooperation the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is in charge of the new area of specialisation "book and paper" of the bachelor course of studies for restoration, art technology and conservation science and in the consecutive master course of studies at the TUM. The theoretical and practical teaching takes place under the lead of the Institute of Book and Manuscript Conservation (IBR) of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, the institute already having trained restorers from 1991 to 2009 within the framework of technical-college courses of a duration of respectively three years.
With the field of specialisation "book and paper" the Technical University of Munich completes its range of courses by adding the science of conservation of the written cultural heritage. Founded in 1997, the chair for restoration, art technology and conservation science stands out for its cooperation with the Bavarian National Museum and the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen (Bavarian State Painting Collections), the Bavarian State Agency for the Preservation of Historical Monuments - and now also the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Due to these cooperations the students are offered an interdisciplinary course of studies and can acquire theoretical and practical skills directly in the restoration departments of these institutions.
