Digital humanities

The multifaceted services of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek are accessible in principle for use by researchers from all academic disciplines. In view of the traditional areas of collection emphasis, the majority of the retro-digitized holdings are of interest to humanities and cultural studies, however, and here in particular for evaluation with the support of computer-aided processes from the method toolbox of digital humanities. In addition to the retrospective digitization of its printed or handwritten collections, which is effected by the Munich Digitization Center, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is also active in the field of genuine digital publishing, offering to science and scholarship its support in the implementation of corresponding projects. The following fields are focal points in this regard:

  • Development of methods for the dynamic publishing of continuously amendable and extendible publications
  • Indexing and linking digital publications for the sake of an improved use of the semantic web's advantages
  • Trial and use of virtual research environments and digital working tools
  • Development of services for storing and linking research data

Represented by its Center for Electronic Publishing, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek forms part of the network "dhmuc. Digital Humanities in Munich" and contributes to the network's range of information and training events. Moreover, the library cooperates with various digital humanities centers and digital humanities infrastructures, such as CLARIN-D or DARIAH-DE.
