As Arthur Schopenhauer put it: "Newspapers are the sweep hand of history."
There are events or biographies that can be reconstructed only by doing research in historical newspapers. Newspapers have become available in libraries not only in the original, paper form: The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and other institutions digitize their copyright-free holdings of newspapers and make them available free of charge on the Internet. Special software, such as OCR (optical character recognition), makes it possible to recognise the scanned texts, thus making them searchable for certain terms.

Contents:

  • The reasons for doing newspaper research
  • Finding historical newspapers from a certain location
  • Digitization of newspapers
  • Full-text search in historical newspaper portals (e.g. digiPress and ANNO)

Target groups: Regional historians, researchers of person-related matters and everybody interested in history
