Reopening of the Bavarian National Theatre
Twenty years after the national theatre had been destroyed by aircraft bombs, its reopening could finally be celebrated on 21 November 1963. The reconstruction costs amounted to 62 million Mark. Although it would have been more cost-effective to build again from scratch, many citizens were in favour of a reconstruction. Reconstructed authentically, but equipped with modern opera technology and a larger stage, the opera house was opened again with Richard Strauss’s opera "Die Frau ohne Schatten" ("The woman without a shadow").
