By preserving the photo archive of the stern, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek preserves a photo archive of unique dimensions and contemporary-historical importance on a worldwide level. The objective of the online presentation of the stern Photo Archive by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is to support scholarship, research, education and study, as well as occupational activity.
Within the scope of reporting about current or historical events, the photo stories and individual photographs shown were provided with titles and annotations on the back sides of the contact sheets by the picture editors of the stern and the photographers in question at the time of their creation. These texts are reproduced without any changes – by the exception of obvious typing errors and incomprehensible abbreviations – in the fields "Original Title (Photo Story)" and "Photo Story Contents".
Against the background of the wide variety of subjects covered and due to the time and context of the creation of the respective contents, the collection of the stern Photo Archive may also contain image contents and terminology which relate to violent or dramatic events and/or which may possibly be considered inappropriate from today’s point of view. For reasons of historically reconstructive, source-critical work, these are reproduced without any changes for the sake of supporting scholarship and research and within the scope of reporting about current or historical events. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek expressly distances itself from all contents of violence-glorifying, discriminatory and propagandistic nature.
