Reference library and use of the reading room

The East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room – on the 3nd floor – accommodates important reference- and standard works, as well as source works of three internationally renowned collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek:

  • Around 30,000 volumes on the countries of east, east-central-, and south-east Europe
  • Around 8,000 volumes on the Orient
  • Around 10,000 volumes on the countries of Asia

The entire collection housed in the reading room is traceable in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue (location mark: Hbost = eastern Europe and Hbor = Orient and Asia).

Search tip: You can locate items belonging to the reference library of the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room in targeted manner in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue by clicking on "Suche eingrenzen" (limit search), "Lesesaalbestand" (reading-room collection) and "Ostlesesaal" (East Reading Room).

The collections of the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room may be used exclusively in the reading room. Books and other media can also be ordered from the stacks for use in the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room via the OPACplus.

The reading room offers 56 work places, among them 10 media work stations.

Digitization orders

The digitization and photographic reproductions service within the framework of the document delivery service "Altes Buch" ("older and rare printed works") of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek produces high-quality and reproducible scans. You can generate corresponding orders for reproductions with the aid of the programme ERaTo. Digitization orders from the department's collections can also be placed in the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room or can be placed in writing.

Reading room collection on eastern Europe

The reference library eastern Europe is one of Europe's best working places for research on eastern Europe, from point of view of both quantity and quality.

The eastern Europe collection of the reading room encompasses dictionaries, historical and current general and subject-related encyclopaedias, the relevant national, regional and other bibliographies, catalogues of important libraries specialising in eastern Europe, genealogical reference works, registers of locations, statistical yearbooks, as well as manuals and other standard works in printed and electronic form.

The reference library further encompasses bound annual volumes of selected, frequently requested periodicals. Current issues of periodicals and newspapers are available in the Periodicals Reading Room, in contrast.

A large portion of the reference library is available in the original east European languages, but also literature in German, English or French is provided in a broad scope.

The reading room collection is shelved according to countries, and within the country sections according to subject areas and fields of specialisation.

Presentation of new acquisitions

The newly acquired books of the eastern Europe collection are exhibited from the 1st to the 10th day of every month.

Reading room collection on the Orient

The reference library on the Orient contains dictionaries, encyclopaedias, bibliographies and other reference works, predominantly in Oriental languages, but also in German, English or French. It contains a total of around 8,000 volumes.

All Oriental works held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, including the reading room collection, can be searched in transcription in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue. Since 2007, Arabic, Persian and Hebrew titles have been catalogued also in the original scripts.

Unbound issues of Oriental periodicals in the original languages are available in the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room. Most original-language periodicals from the Orient are acquired in a bound state and are searchable in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue.

Reading room collection on Asia

The reference library on Asia (focusing on east Asia) encompasses general and special reference works in Asian languages, but also in German, English or French. The total of around 10,000 volumes is shelved in accordance with countries and partly in accordance with language groups, and within these, in accordance with subject-related subdivisions. The literature on Buddhology represents a subdivision of its own.

A selection of the current, unbound original-language periodicals and newspapers is available. Most periodicals in the original languages are acquired in a bound state and are searchable in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue. Original-language periodicals from the subject area of sciences and medicine are available in the Periodicals Reading Room.

The Asian collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, including the reading room collection, can be searched in transcription in the OPACplus/ BSB catalogue, the Japanese and Chinese titles being searchable also in the original scripts. Merely the collections in the Thai language have not yet been catalogued electronically; for these, an author and title catalogue is available in the reading room.

Taiwan Resource Center for Chinese Studies (TRCCS)

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has been hosting a Taiwan Resource Center for Chinese Studies since 2014. For the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek this means among other things that substantial amounts of Sinological research literature can now be obtained regularly free of charge from Taiwan via the National Central Library. The most recent titles are available in each case in a separate area of the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room, older titles are accommodated in the stacks. All titles are searchable in the OPACplus of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
