Despite the limitations due to the Corona pandemic, which unfortunately have to remain in place, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers extensive services, many of which can also be used independently of location, in order to obtain the required information. Some of these services will be offered only temporarily and in a manner adapted to our personnel capacities.

What regulations need to be observed due to the current situation?

Preliminary simplified registration

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek continues to offer a preliminary simplified registration for the time being to provide you with the possibility, also without having to come to the library in person, to obtain a user ID enabling you to use digital services and e-media services which are not freely accessible. We have compiled all details of the procedure and the required documents in the following.

Reading rooms

The number of working places in the reading rooms still continues to be reduced due to the mandatory hygiene and distancing rules. Prior reservation of a working place is required for each visit to a reading room.
Please always present your reader pass when visiting a reading room. It is checked on the basis of the reader pass whether visitors have a valid reading-room reservation. Copies of the reader pass (in digital or paper form) are not accepted.

Access to the research reading rooms – the Aventinus Reading Room, the Reading Room for Manuscripts and Rare Books, the Reading Room Music/Maps/Images and the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room – is granted to all scholars and researchers for their respective field of specialisation, in particular for working with literature and media which can be ordered only for provision in the respective research reading room and/or can be used exclusively there.

Copying services and document delivery services at a fee

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers various document delivery services (at a fee), which are available to you.

Via subito, you can order copies from a journal or a book – from around 54,000 journals and 10 million books held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek alone – and have them delivered to the address stated on your request. In case you do not have any exact bibliographical references or do not know the exact page numbers, we can currently send you the table of contents of the required volume by e-mail free of charge as an additional service.

Within the framework of the document delivery service "Altes Buch", individual copies or scans or complete digital copies can be made of copyright-free works at a charge. "eBooks on Demand" is a document delivery service at a charge, allowing our users to order complete electronic copies of copyright-free books from the period between 1501 to around 1900.

Books and copies can be ordered via interlibrary loan. Collection on site is possible during the regular opening hours of the local loan service (Ortsleihe; media issue for home loan). For delivery, the free-of-charge book delivery to your address can also be used. Media for circulation in the reading rooms only can be used in the reading room in question following reservation of a working place.
