Our current services – Information on using the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek during the corona crisis
Despite the limitations due to the SARS-CoV-2/ coronavirus, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers extensive services, many of which can also be used independently of location, in order to obtain the required information. Some of these services will be offered only temporarily and in a manner adapted to our personnel capacities. Subject to a further positive development of infection numbers, we want to continue expanding our services continuously.
- With respect to the services on site, please observe the applicable limitations and access conditions.
- Wearing a face mask is obligatory throughout the library. Face masks may be taken off exclusively directly at the working places in the reading rooms.
- The number of available working places in the reading rooms has been reduced. Prior registration is required for all reading rooms.
- Access to the registration/ book collection/ book return/ information area is limited. A maximum of 30 persons may be present in this area at the same time.
- PC workstations on site are not available for hygiene reasons.
- Please observe the mandatory safety distance of at least 1.5 metres and follow the generally known rules of hygiene throughout the library.
User registration on site is reopened with limited access (Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, a maximum of 30 persons may be present in the registration, book collection, book return, information area at the same time).
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek continues to offer a preliminary simplified registration for the time being to provide you with the possibility, also without having to come to the library in person, to obtain a user ID enabling you to use digital services and e-media services which are not freely accessible. We have compiled all details of the procedure and the required documents in the following.
The number of available working places has been reduced due to the mandatory hygiene and distancing rules. Therefore, prior registration is required for every visit to the reading rooms.
General Reading Room and Periodicals Reading Room
The General Reading Room is opened from Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 21:00.
The Periodicals Reading Room is opened from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00.
Access is only possible with registration.
Research reading rooms
The research reading rooms – the Aventinus Reading Room, the Reading Room for Manuscripts and Rare Books, the Reading Room Music/ Maps/ Images and the East European, Oriental and Asian Reading Room – are opened from Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 17:00 in each case.
Access is only possible with registration. Access is granted to all scholars for their respective field of specialisation, in particular for working with literature and media which can be ordered only for provision in the respective research reading room and/or can be used exclusively there.
There are two options for the provision of the items ordered for home loan:
Do you wish to collect the items in person?
They will usually be available for collection after 2 to 3 working days at the local lending area (Ortsleihe) during the current opening hours. Home loan with collection/ return of items on site is opened again with limited access (Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 17:00, a maximum of 30 persons may be present in the registration, book collection, book return, information area at the same time).
Do you wish to have the ordered items sent to you within Germany?
For this purpose, it is essential that you additionally fill in the order for the book delivery service at a fee and send it to us after placing your book order. Please note that you can use this service only on condition that you already have a reader pass or a twelve-digit user number of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
Until further notice, also a purely electronic "preliminary simplified registration" has been put in place for this purpose.
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers various document delivery services (at a fee), which are available to you.
Via subito, you can order copies from a journal or a book – from around 54,000 journals and 10 million books held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek alone – and have them delivered to the address stated on your request. In case you do not have any exact bibliographical references or do not know the exact page numbers, we can currently send you the table of contents of the required volume by e-mail free of charge as an additional service.
Within the framework of the document delivery service "Altes Buch", individual copies or scans or complete digital copies can be made of copyright-free works at a charge. "eBooks on Demand" is a document delivery service at a charge, allowing our users to order complete electronic copies of copyright-free books from the period between 1501 to around 1900.
Books and copies can be ordered again via the interlibrary loan system as usual. However, since not all libraries have started participating in the interlibrary loan system again to the full extent, it can occur more frequently that requests cannot be fulfilled. Regarding the type of provision, you can choose either home loan or consultation in one of the reading rooms.
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek provides access to a large number of electronic journals, e-books and specialised databases, for which the library holds licenses from academic publishing houses. These services are available to registered users of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek predominantly independently of location, also from outside the library’s premises, by logging in with your user ID. Concerning a part of the media, access is geographically limited to the Munich metropolitan area for licensing reasons.
The webinar "Neu hier? Kein Problem! Die Bayerische Staatsbibliothek für Einsteiger" ("Are you new? No problem! – The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek for beginners") (in German) will take place every Tuesday at 15:30 (will not take place on 11 and 18 August 2020) and further webinars with different topics are offered.
