Simplified registration process

User registration on site is reopened with limited access.
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers a simplified registration process for the time being to provide you with the possibility, also without having to come to the library in person, to obtain a user ID enabling you to use digital services and e-media services which are not freely accessible. We have compiled all details of the procedure and the required documents in the following.

Book delivery or collection on site

Until further notice, up to 6 items per user can be ordered at the same time for home loan from the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek using your user account. There are two options for the provision of these items:

Do you wish to collect the items in person?
They will usually be available for collection after 2 to 3 working days at the local lending area (Ortsleihe) during the current opening hours. Home loan with collection/ return of items on site is opened again with limited access.

Do you wish to have the ordered items sent to you within Germany?
For this purpose, it is essential that you additionally fill in the order for the book delivery service at a fee and send it to us after placing your book order. Please note that you can use this service only on condition that you already have a reader pass or a twelve-digit user number of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.
Until further notice, also a purely electronic "simplified registration process" has been put in place for this purpose.

Copying services and document delivery services

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers various document delivery services (at a fee), which continue to be available to you.

Via subito, you can order copies from a journal or a book – from around 54,000 journals and 10 million books held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek alone – and have them delivered to the address stated on your request. In case you do not have any exact bibliographical references or do not know the exact page numbers, we can send you the table of contents of the required volume by e-mail free of charge as an additional service for the time of the closure.

Within the framework of the document delivery service "Altes Buch", individual copies or scans or complete digital copies can be made of copyright-free works at a charge. "eBooks on Demand" is a document delivery service at a charge, allowing our users to order complete electronic copies of copyright-free books from the period between 1501 to around 1900.

Since 20 April, it has been possible again to use the interlibrary loan system for ordering articles from journals and books in the form of copies. Due to a special agreement concluded with the collecting society of authors (VG Wort), copies may be delivered by e-mail as an exception up to and including 31 May 2020.

E-media and digital collections – available anytime and anywhere

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek provides access to a large number of electronic journals, e-books and specialised databases, for which the library holds licenses from academic publishing houses. These services are available to registered users of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek predominantly independently of location, also from outside the library’s premises, by logging in with your user ID. Concerning a part of the media, access is geographically limited to the Munich metropolitan area for licensing reasons.

Several publishing houses also support the libraries in the current situation by various special campaigns, such as temporary provision of open access or increasing the number of permitted simultaneous logins.
