Thinking of a library invokes the image of books of course. But the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek collects other types of media as well, making them available to researchers from all over the world. The Department of Maps and Images has a particularly great amount of unusual items. There are hand-drawn historical maps, over 415,000 individual printed geographic maps, several image archives (among them the archive of the journal stern including 15 million images) and much more. The department preserves numerous valuable, even unique collection items.

On 12 December 2022, we will visit Dr. Cornelia Jahn, the Head of the Department of Maps and Images. She will tell us what a typical working day looks like and give an insight into the collection. Of course, we will also show many images and digital copies during the interview. And you are welcome to use our chat if you would like to put any questions to Dr. Jahn during the interview.
