About the conference

On 22 and 23 March 2018, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek organises an academic conference on the manuscript tablatures and partbooks of the 16th and 17th century in cooperation with the Professorship of Musicology at the University of Augsburg. The conference is the concluding event of a project for the digitization and online cataloguing of the manuscripts.

Titled "To sing many a tune or to play the organ and the lute", the conference addresses the broad spectrum of the collection with regard to the study of primary sources and cultural history. Papers will broach the contexts of tradition, issues of notation practice and the urban music culture of Renaissance alike. Since a large part of the manuscripts are from the civic environment of Augsburg, a further focal point is the connection between the Fugger city and the music collection of the Munich Court Library.

The conference is organised in cooperation with the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and the Orff Center Munich.

We would like to thank the Fritz Thyssen Foundation for their kind support.

All information about the conference and the project can be found on the conference website.
