About the event
Fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of sense of taste, brain fog, problems with concentrating: Around ten percent of all Covid patients still complain about these and similar symptoms several months after the infection, even if the illness has taken a mild course and the affected persons had been young, healthy and strong performers before. In addition, recent studies show that a Covid infection can also lead to accelerated ageing of the brain. This could mean that the number of people suffering from dementia will rise considerably in the coming years. This alarming finding, among others, shows: Long Covid is the new widespread disease – medical practitioners and scientists warn against the long-term consequences for the individual patient and for society on the whole.
Prof. Dr. Martin Korte, who does research on Long Covid himself at the Helmholtz Institute for Infection Research and at the Technical University of Braunschweig, explains in his new book how a virus infection in the body can cause damage to the brain, and from which life-long diseases people of all age groups may suffer as a consequence. In addition, he gives numerous concrete indications as to minimising the risk of suffering from Long Covid, which therapies patients can benefit from and what patients can do themselves to re-obtain physical and mental fitness.
The event is being held in cooperation with Deutsche Verlagsanstalt (DVA).
Moderation: Christina Berndt (SZ)
Personal data
Martin Korte is a professor for neurobiology at the Technical University of Braunschweig, head of a working group at the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research in Braunschweig, and one of Germany’s most widely known brain researchers. He examines the cellular basis of learning, memorising and forgetting, as well as the interaction of the immune system and the nervous system in the context of Alzheimer’s disease. Together with his working group, he was one of the first researchers able to show that respiratory diseases caused by viruses lead to long-term consequences in the brain due to a hyper-activation of the immune system. His current focus of research is on Long Covid. Martin Korte is an expert who is highly sought-after by the media and known to the public through his appearances on television and as a lecturer.
