About the conference
A symposium will take place on 1 and 2 March 2018 at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek on the occasion of the conclusion of the project "Description and digitization of precious book covers as independent works of art" supported by the German Research Foundation. The goal of the DFG project is the development of a description standard for precious book covers, which constitute plastic objects of art and assume an exceptional position between the text-oriented collections of the libraries and the object-oriented historical art collections.
DFG project "Description and digitization of precious book covers as independent works of art"
Since October 2014 a corpus of around 60 Western goldwork bindings of the Middle Ages and the modern era and around 100 Tibetan book covers from the collection of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek have been used as a basis for developing modular standards for describing these independent objects of art. In an accompanying, camera-based workflow, the objects are digitized and made publicly accessible on the Internet including the results of the analysis. A number of select objects from the two bodies are additionally thoroughly analysed by the Institute of Conservation and Restoration (IBR) of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek applying material-scientific and art-technological methods.
Now the results of the three parts of the project (Western goldwork bindings, Tibetan book covers and material-scientific and art-technological analyses) will be presented and discussed with international experts. The symposium scheduled for one and a half days will focus on the following topics:
- Discussion of the description and presentation model
- Re-usability for own projects/ purposes
- Establishment of ties to other research-relevant information
- Networking with the services of other collection-conserving institutions (museums and libraries)
- Language of the description: Thesauri and ontologies
- Ideas and perspectives
Accordingly, the symposium will focus on discussing the results of the standardisation project from the perspective of the various communities with respect to the scholarly and scientific benefit and the possibilities of further use.
