The Munich Digitization Center (Münchener Digitalisierungszentrum, MDZ) has been providing the rich holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek on the Internet since 1997. It is the central innovation and also production unit of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek for developing, testing and implementing new products and processes related to the multifaceted, far-ranging subject of the "digital library", particularly in the fields of digitization and long-time archiving.

As a division of the department "Digital Library and Bavarica", the MDZ is not only in charge of producing, cataloguing and publishing the digital copies, but also of making available all other electronic documents of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek within the framework of the library's collection mandate and the legal deposits.

The MDZ carries out digitization and long-term archiving projects, develops open-source software and devises workflows for projects of different scales.
