German manuscripts

In the second half of the 19th century a first catalogue was printed comprising the collection Cgm (Codices germanici monacenses) 1 – 5154. In the course of the 20th century Erich Petzet (1920) and Karin Schneider (1970 et seq.) compiled a more detailed catalogue of the medieval holdings to replace the older printed catalogue. These catalogues are searchable online via "Manuscripta Mediaevalia". The dated manuscripts are contained in a series of catalogues of their own. Dieter Kudorfer started cataloguing the modern manuscripts from Cgm 5155 onward. However, for all holdings up to Cgm 5154 the old catalogue is still valid. The manuscripts Cgm 5801 – 9425 are so far only catalogued in the handwritten repertory.

Latin manuscripts

The collection Clm (Codices latini monacenses) 1 to 27268 was catalogued during the second half of the 19th century by Karl Halm and others in the form of printed catalogues. These are also searchable online, by the exception of the shelf marks Clm 10351 to 10428. During the past decades the collection was extensively recatalogued in view of the provenances of the materials (holdings from Benediktbeuern, Freising and St. Emmeram in Regensburg). The project has been supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Some parts of the published catalogues can be searched online via "Manuscripta Mediaevalia". In addition the cataloguing of the Latin supplement was started, beginning with Clm 27270, which is satisfactorily catalogued and indexed in modern catalogues, by the exception of a small collection of mainly modern manuscripts.

Greek manuscripts

Some parts of the collection of Greek manuscripts are catalogued comprehensively. In addition to the catalogue drawn up by Ignaz Hardt (1806 – 1812), which comprises Cod.graec. 1 – 580, the compilation of modern descriptions was started, which are intended to replace the catalogue drawn up by Hardt and some older inventories in the medium term, and to also encompass the new acquisitions since the beginning of the 19th century.

Manuscripts in European languages

The manuscript collection in European languages (English, French, Spanish, Italian as well as Danish, Swedish, Estonian, Hungarian and Slavic languages) is searchable in a printed catalogue. However, this catalogue comprises only the collections up to the year of acquisition 1858. Newer catalogues exist for a part of the manuscripts in Slavic languages and for the manuscripts in the Catalan language. New acquisitions after 1858 – also encompassing manuscripts in the Norwegian, Icelandic, Rhaeto-Romanic and Romanian languages – are catalogued in the handwritten repertory.

Oriental and Asian manuscripts

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds approximately 17,000 manuscripts in Oriental languages (of the Middle East and Africa, e.g. Arabic, Turkish, Persian, Hebrew, Zend, Ethiopian, Armenian) and Asian languages (of South-, Central-, Eastern- and South-East Asia, e.g. Tibetan, Mongolian, Sanskrit, Singhalese, Burmese, Thai, Javanese, Chinese, Japanese). Some of the manuscript language-groups were published in the manuscript catalogues of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and in the repertory of Oriental manuscripts in Germany.

Overview of the Oriental and Asian manuscripts

The most valuable Oriental and Asian manuscripts are represented in the exhibition catalogue "Das Buch im Orient" (The book in the Orient) published in 1982. Moreover, the exhibition catalogues of 1998 "Prachtkorane aus tausend Jahren" (Splendid Qurans of a millennium), of 2005 "Die Worte des Buddha in den Sprachen der Welt" (The words of Buddha in the languages of the world), of 2008 "Liebe, Götter und Dämonen" (Love, gods and demons) and of 2010 "Die Wunder der Schöpfung" (The miracles of creation) offer more recent descriptions of most valuable and fascinating objects.

Exhibition catalogues

Acquisitions made since the publication date of the respective catalogues are indexed exclusively in the handwritten repertory, as of the publication year 2008 also in BSB DISCOVER!. The digital copies represent the acquisition status of mid-2012, more recent additions can be found in BSB DISCOVER! (searchable by inputting the manuscript shelf mark) or via the Digital Collections.

Illuminated manuscripts, Codices Iconographici

For the illuminated manuscripts of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek special catalogues have been drawn up, which are categorized according to the individual epochs. All manuscripts which have not yet been catalogued and indexed are entered in a preparatory work index. An overview of the catalogued manuscripts and of the manuscripts on which work is currently in progress is available online. The library furthermore holds 554 iconographic manuscripts – the so-called Codices iconographici –, which are searchable online. In 2013 a printed catalogue was published on this.

Modern papers and autographs

The modern papers held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek up to 1829 were categorized to form part of the manuscripts, e.g. bearing the shelf marks Cgm or Clm. Since 1829 they have predominantly had their own category with the shelf mark "Ana", e.g. as Liebigiana or Ana 532. A comprehensive overview of the personal papers acquired up to 1970 was published by Karl Dachs, and an updated alphabetic list of personal papers is available online. For numerous collections of personal papers there are detailed repertories or preliminary inventory lists which can be consulted in the Reading Room for Manuscripts and Rare Books. They are also accessible online to a large extent. Some individual repertories are also available in print – in addition to some new repertories also that on the Camerarius collection, which is an important collection of early modern times.
Modern papers and autographs
The individual autographs collected since 1858 and also the correspondence parts of the catalogued personal papers are searchable in a card catalogue, the majority of which has in the meantime been integrated in the database Kalliope of the central index of autographs at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. Since 1992 the index has been continued in electronic form as the autographs database of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

Music manuscripts

The Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books preserves the music manuscripts with predominantly unisonous music up to the year 1500, as well as a small number of codices with music for several voices, bearing the shelf marks Clm and Cgm. The early holdings of the Mus.ms. are contained in the catalogue compiled by Julius Joseph Maier (1879). In 1989 a special catalogue was published for the complete holdings of handwritten choir books of the Department of Music and the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books, for the first time indexing all works comprised (Kataloge Bayerischer Musiksammlungen [Catalogues of Bavarian music collections], volume 5,1). German and Latin manuscripts containing also music for one or several voices in addition to the text can be located under the respective Cgm or Clm shelf mark in the corresponding catalogues. Concerning the about 300 items of personal papers from the field of music the music manuscripts and sheet music are kept in the Department of Music (shelf marks Mus.ms.), the "literary" part (letters, documents, etc.) are kept and indexed by the Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books (Ana shelf marks).

Papyri

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns a collection of more than 750 papyri, among them about 450 in the Greek language (Pap.graec.mon.), which are partly contained in printed catalogues of newer dates and otherwise in handwritten repertories, as well as papyri in the Demotic, Coptic, Latin, Aramaic and Arabic languages (shelf mark groups Pap.arab.mon., Pap.aram.mon., Pap.copt.mon., Pap.demot.mon., Pap.lat.mon.). The largest and most important group of papyri from point of view of content is the Greek. It consists predominantly of deeds, but also of literary papyri, from the era of Ptolemy up to the end of antiquity.

Handwritten catalogues

Among the shelf mark group of the Codices bavarici monacenses Catalogi (Cbm Cat.) the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek keeps numerous historical catalogues of secularised and mediatised holdings, as well as early catalogues of the royal court and state library, which feature in the "catalogue of catalogues". Indexes which were compiled by Johann Andreas Schmeller (1785 – 1852) or later are not contained herein, but can be searched via the corresponding repertory.
