Including partly exclusive image material of the protagonists – beyond the official reporting taking place –, the pictures document the Bonn and Berlin Republics with all their players and stakeholders and the domestic and foreign political events of the time. Dieter Bauer accompanied the Federal Chancellors Schmidt, Kohl, Schröder and Angela Merkel, as well as numerous well-known politicians on journeys abroad. He also reported from areas of crisis and war worldwide.

The archive comprises around 500,000 pictures (negatives, slides, prints, born-digital photos) from the years 1980 to 2010. It was acquired from Dieter Bauer against the background of the takeover of the stern Photo Archive by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek.

Its cataloguing and digitization are in their early stages.
