Polonica
The Polish collection includes approximately 150,000 volumes and still consists predominantly of printed materials. In recent years, the annual increase has amounted to around 3,500 monographs. The holdings also include periodicals, with around 1,300 titles, among them 900 current periodicals. They are partly electronic journals, the proportion of which has increased strongly in recent years. The majority of the historical holdings – starting with the 16th century – are available digitally in the open access format using the library catalogue.
Incunabula
The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns two incunabula printed in Krakow:
Platea, Franciscus de: Opus restitutionum, usurarum et excommunicationum. [Krakow], 1475.

Incunabula of Matthew of Krakow, the later bishop of Worms, whose printed works were published in Memmingen, among other places, and of whom we do not know conclusively whether he was Polish or German, can likewise be counted among the Polish collection. This is analogously applicable to the incunabula print of the "Missale Cracoviense" printed by Georg Stuchs around 1495. The print was commissioned by Johannes Haller, a citizen of Krakow, with the authorization of the bishop of Krakow and Gniezno (one of the largest bishoprics in Europe at the time), Frederick Jagiellon (Polish: Fryderyk Jagiellończyk), who, in turn, was the son of the Polish king and grand duke of Lithuania, Casimir II (1427 – 1492) and Elizabeth of Austria (1437 – 1505).

16th century
While literature was predominantly of a religious nature in the 15th century, the range of topics became broader in the 16th century. In addition to works in the Latin language, more literature was produced in the Polish language.
- The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds a number of works of the Polish poet Klemens Janicki, including "Tristia" (1542), "Epitalamii Serenissimo Regi Poloniae Sigismundo ... scripti, aeditio posthuma" (1543), "Vitae Regum Polonorum Elegiaco carmine descriptae" (1575) and "Vitae archiepiscoporum Gnesensium ..." (1574).
- The book "Pochodnia Kościół Boży prawdziwy" (1584) is a perfect example of the polemic writings of the Catholic theologian Hieronim Powodowski directed against the Polish Brethren.
- The most important poet of Polish Renaissance, Jan Kochanowski, is present with the work "Fragmenta álbó pozostáłé pismá" (1590) and the poem collection "Jan Kochanowski" (1600).
- The famous work by the pioneer of Polish genealogy, Bartłomiej (Bartosz) Paprocki, "Herby rycerztwa polskiego" (1584) merits mention as well.
- The "Constitucie y Przywileie ná Wálnych Seymiech Koronnych od Roku 1550 áź do Roku 1569 uchwálone" (1569) contain documents of the Polish regional parliaments.
- Maciej z Miechowa is a further Polish renaissance author. His "Tractatus de duabus Sarmatiis" (1518) describes the geography and ethnography of Eastern Europe. His view of the Polish history is pictured in the "Chronica Polonorum" (1521). Maciej z Miechowa is also the author of the medical textbook "Conservatio Sanitatis" (1522).
- The main work by Nicolaus Copernicus "De revolutionibus orbium coelestium" (1543) explains the heliocentric system.
- The most widely known work by the Renaissance thinker Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski is the disquisition "Commentarii de Republica emendanda" (1554). A further work by this author is "Andreae Fricii Modrevii libri tres" (1562).
- One of the most important works by Stanislaus Hosius, a representative of the Polish Counter-Reformation, is "Confessio catholicae fidei Christiana" (1557). Further works are contained in the two-volume collection "Opera omnia" (1584).
- Among the most important works of the humanist Marcin Kromer there are "De origine et rebus gestis Polonorum libri XXX" (1558) and "Polonia siue de sitv popvlis, moribvs, magistratibvs et repvblica regni Polonici" (1577).
- The author of the works "Pro Sacratissima Eucharistia contra haeresim Zwinglianam" (1576) and "Kazania o siedmi sákrámentách kośćioła s. Kátholickiego" (1600) is the Jesuit Piotr Skarga.

17th century
- The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns two Polish manuscripts of the 17th century. One of them is a register of a coin collection of Krzysztof Radziwiłł "Inventarium collectionis nummorum Principis Christophori Radzivil lingua Polonica" (1631). The second manuscript is the "prayer book of Maria Kazimiera Sobieska" of the 17th century (1677).
- The lord steward Mikołaj Krzysztof Radziwiłł went on a pilgrimage to Jerusalem from 1582 to 1584. Thomasz Treter wrote an adaptation of the original Polish book on this in the Latin language, titled "Hierosolymitana peregrinatio" (1601). This Latin text was later translated back into Polish: "Peregrinacia Abo Pielgrzymowanie do Zięmie Swiętey" (1607).
- From the important translator of Renaissance literature Piotr Kochanowski, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds a later edition (1687) of his translation of the "Goffred abo Jeruzalem wyzwolona" by Torquato Tasso.
- The three-volume "Thesaurus Polono-Latino-Graecus" was written by Grzegorz Knapski, one of Poland's most important lexicographers. The second Latin-Polish volume (1626) has been digitized.
- The book "Monumenta Sarmatarum" (1655) was written by Szymon Starowolski, who mostly wrote in Latin. Among the further works there are: "Simonis Starovolsci Polonia: nunc denuo recognita et aucta" (1652), "Ad Principes Christianos De Pace …" (1645), "Institutorum rei militaris libri octo" (1645) and "Epitome conciliorum tam generalium, quam provincialium in graeca et latina Ecclesia celebratorum …" (1653).
- Written by Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, the most widely known Polish writer of Baroque literature, who wrote in Latin, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns the poem collection "Lyricorum libri IV" (1632).
- The book "Wojna domowa z Kozaki i Tatary" (1681), written in the form of a poem, is from the Baroque poet Samuel Twardowski.
- Łukasz Górnicki is the author of the historical treatise "Dzieie w Koronie Polskiey" (1637).
- Written in Latin, the book "Nova Gigantomachia" (1655) by the priest Augustyn Kordecki describes the siege of the monastery of Jasna Góra during the Swedish-Polish war.
- The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns a number of political and historical writings by Andrzej Maksymilian Fredro. The widely known treatise "Monita politico-moralia" (1664) is available at the library in the form of an edition of the year 1679. A further work is titled "Gestorum Populi Poloni sub Henrico Valesio" (1652).
- There are also some works by Wespazjan Kochowski, historian and Baroque poet, i.a. "Hipomnema Reginarum Poloniae" (1672). The collection further includes the historical report about the Ottoman siege of Vienna "Commentarius belli adversum Turcas" (1684) and the historical treatise "Annalium Poloniae Climacter secundus" (1688).

20th – 21st century
- The historical novel "Popioły" by Stefan Żeromski was initially printed as a series in the Warsaw weekly journal "Tygodnik Ilustrowany" in 1902. The book edition was published by Marchlewski in Munich in 1903. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek owns all three volumes of this edition. In the same year, Marchlewski published the first translation of the narrations "Rozdziobią nas kruki, wrony" into German, titled "Den Raben und Geiern zum Fraß" (Ravens and Crows Will Peck Us to Pieces). The collection also encompasses Stefan Żeromski's works "Dziela" (1973 – 1975) and over 20 volumes of the not yet concluded collected works "Pisma zebrane" (since 1983).
- The collection includes numerous works of the Polish Nobel Prize laureate Władysław Reymont, among them various multi-volume editions of the "Pisma", from both the years 1920 to 1923 and the post-war period (1949 – 1952 and later).
- Most volumes of the 12-volume edition of the works "Pisma" (1901 – 1907) of the writer and artist Stanisław Wyspiański are available in the form of first editions.
- A selection of further multi-volume collected works of well-known authors:
- The poem collection "Poezye" (1915 – 1925) by Maria Konopnicka
- The works "Dziela" (1986 – 1997) by Witold Gombrowicz
