Korean

General

The Korean collection of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek encompasses around 3,000 titles, among them 74 manuscripts. The works are predominantly publications from the 20th century, around 150 titles in 600 volumes date back to before 1900. A selection of secondary literature in Western languages is available as well.

The Korean collection was started at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in the 1950s. Due to budget cuts, the acquisition of Korean publications had to be discontinued in the 1990s.

All Korean titles are searchable in BSB DISCOVER! in transcription. However, BSB DISCOVER! contains only very brief specifications on the Korean manuscripts. Further information can be found in the handwritten repertory in some cases.

Early Korean works

The Korean collection of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek contains around 150 titles in 600 volumes which were produced before 1900. Many of them date back to the 17th or 18th century and address Confucian topics.

There are some outstanding objects among the early Korean works. Among others, some parts of the Buddhist canon printed on Ganghwa Island between 1236 and 1251 (4 L.cor. C 81) merit special mention. The canon's printing blocks are still preserved in their entirety in the Haeinsa monastery today. Another outstanding specimen is a catalogue of medicinal products printed in 1433 with mobile clay letters (L.cor. M 7).
