Within the framework of provenance research at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, three titles from Mayer's property could be identified in the so-called "Gestapo convolute". The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has been searching for Nazi loot among its holdings since 2003 and has already combed through over 60,000 volumes which were sold by their owners browbeaten into doing so or seized and passed on by Nazi organisations such as the secret police between 1933 and 1945.
All three books of the art historian came to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek as a "donation" by the Gestapo around 1939 and bear the associated donor number G.n. 14428. Presumably, a higher number of Mayer's books had originally come to the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek; these were probably destroyed in the fire of 1943 together with the collections of the art reading room.
His daughter Angelika Liebmann has given the restituted books to the library as a donation, they can still be loaned from the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Specially written exlibris will remind every reader of the books of the history of August Liebmann Mayer and the provenance of the titles.
