New layout of the Image Archive's search portal

The search portal of the Image Archive is available to users with a new appearance as of today. The reason for this change is the switch-over to a new database system. In the wake of the switch-over, the picture portal now offers modernised web design and partly enhanced functions.

It is thus possible, for example, to download high-resolution digital copies of copyright-free images free of charge directly in the portal. Moreover, the holdings can now be searched for images with much more precision, since a larger number of filters is available. For example, the filter "Zugang zum Bild" ("access to the image") is useful, which illustrates the various access options in the Image Archive at a glance. In order to acquire a license for the use of an image, users are asked to continue contacting the known e-mail address bildarchiv@bsb-muenchen.de.

Access to the search is possible in the image portal by starting a concrete search with subject headings and filters, or by choosing among three categories. The category "Ausgewählte Reportagen" ("Selected photo stories") shows a selection of topics on which pictures are available in the various photographic archives and collections. The bandwidth of events and motifs is great: From the revolution in Munich in 1918 to the construction of the Bavarian Zugspitzbahn cable railway, the destructions of war in the Bavarian capital and up to the state visit of Queen Elisabeth II in 1965 and the Olympic Games of 1972, etc. These topics are complemented by numerous portraits and historical views from the 16th century to the present.

So far, over 240,000 pictures can be searched in the portal in total, with 21,000 pictures being free of copyright and thus available for direct download. Further pictures from the holdings are catalogued and digitized continuously, so that this number is going to grow in the future.
