The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek considers the newly acquired convolute of 30 Buddhist manuscripts – 28 palm-leaf manuscripts from Sri Lanka and 2 Burmese manuscripts – as a highly valuable extension of the holdings of Buddhist manuscripts, and of the group of Singhalese writings in particular. The manuscripts partly date back to the 16th century and are of different sizes. The original book covers are partly provided with beautiful, multicoloured ornaments which are a distinguishing mark of Buddhist texts from Sri Lanka. Among the manuscripts, there are also medical elaborations on Ayurveda, an astrological treatise and a grammar book.
