With the programme "Fachinformationsdienste für die Wissenschaft", the DFG supports libraries in their role as service providers for research and scholarship. The objective of the funding is the establishment of custom-tailored information services for individual disciplines. The Specialised Information Services provide research-relevant resources and digital services for the scholarly peak demand which go far beyond the primary information provision by libraries. Thus, scholars in Germany can obtain fast and direct access to specialist literature and research-relevant information independently of the location of their activities.
The following three Specialised Information Services will be supported by the DFG from 2019 to 2021:
- Specialised Information Service for Historical Studies – historicum.net
All services of the cooperation between the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and the Deutsches Museum (sub-disciplines of history of technology and sciences and environmental history) are accessible via the central access point historicum.net. In addition to acquiring and cataloguing specialist literature and organising access to these materials, the portfolio includes research portals, the Deutsche Historische Bibliografie (German Historical Bibliography), the review platform recensio.regio, services for the digitization of out-of-print works, and much more.
- Specialised Information Service for Russian, East and Southeast European Studies
The varied and modern services of the Specialised Information Service are directed to multi-disciplinary research on Eastern and South-Eastern Europe. In addition to the Germany-wide provision of printed and electronic publications, it includes highly differentiated search tools, services that can be personalised in accordance with the user’s individual research focus, digitization and web archiving, as well as the electronic publication of research data. All services are accessible free of charge via a portal which is operated and continuously further developed by the Specialised Information Service in cooperation with a number of internationally renowned scholarly institutions.
- Specialised Information Service for Classical Studies – Propylaeum
In its information and publication portal propylaeum.de, which is run in cooperation with the University Library of Heidelberg, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek offers innovative services for a broad spectrum of disciplines of classical studies. One core area managed and developed further under the primary responsibility of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is the sustainable provision of excellent specialist information via the bibliographic database "Gnomon Bibliographische Datenbank". PropylaeumSEARCH is an interdisciplinary search tool which interconnects a multiplicity of data sources that had been isolated so far.
In addition, the Specialised Information Service for Musicology has been managed by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek since 2014.
Klaus Ceynowa, Director General of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek: "The grant of the three continuation requests is a great success for our institution. It gives us the opportunity to implement projects and services for scholarship constantly and in the long term, and to thus make an important contribution to research and scholarship in Germany."
