African American Newspapers – Source material on African-American history

The database "African American Newspapers" provides access to over 350 US newspapers and thereby unique records from the African-American history, culture and everyday life over one and a half centuries, from 1827 to 1998. Accordingly, it also constitutes source material for disciplines such as studies of culture, literature, social history, ethnology and others.

The collection of the Series 1, starting with the "Freedom’s Journal" – the first African-American journal published in the USA – includes journals from over 35 states and also contains many rare and historically important titles from the 19th century.

The Series 2 (1835 – 1956) rounds off and expands the comprehensive, unique collection.

Access is available to registered users of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek via the Database Information System.
Access to the database is additionally enabled Germany-wide within the scope of a national license.
