An overview of the department

The department is in charge of acquiring, cataloguing, providing and procuring the map collection and the Image Archive of the library. With more than 400,000 individual maps and 13,000 atlases, it maintains one of the largest map collections in Germany. The Image Archive comprised around 2.2 million individual images up to 2019. With the transfer of the analogue image archive of the journal STERN, including around 11 million negatives and 4 million positives, it has now become one of the biggest image archives of all public-sector institutions in the German language area. one of the largest collections
