Cooperation with the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin – Preußischer Kulturbesitz

On 23 January 2006 the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek Munich and the Berlin State Library – Prussian Cultural Heritage signed a cooperation agreement, committing themselves to acting in a concerted and coordinated manner in the fulfillment of their principal tasks.

The aim of the cooperation agreement is to render the national and international information services and facilities of both libraries even more customer-friendly and efficient. The cooperation focuses on the supply of information in the fields of humanities and social sciences as well as on the coordinated fulfillment of national-librarian tasks.

The cooperation agreement provides for the concerted planning and carrying out of support programmes financed by third parties. The two libraries will furthermore support each other in national and international library institutions. A systematic acquisition policy is intended to yield synergies, and services in the field of the internationally unique special collections will be offered on common platforms.

In the future the two libraries will "market" their valuable manuscripts and historic book holdings even better by joint exhibitions and an increased exhibition transfer. Both libraries will endeavour to develop a common strategy to vigorously push ahead the digitization of the overall German-language cultural heritage in written form. Furthermore, both institutions intend to optimise their business processes by mutual organisational consultation and performance evaluation.
