German Research Foundation approves 2.4 million euros for the expansion of the Specialised Information Service for Musicology

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (BSB) and the Saxon Regional Library – State and University Library Dresden (SLUB) have started the fifth phase of the Fachinformationsdienst (FID) Musikwissenschaft (Specialised Information Service for Musicology), a project subsidised by the German Research Foundation since 2014 and now extended by a further three years. The funding volume of the 5th phase amounts to around 2.4 million euros. The objective of the infrastructure project is to provide relevant information services for research in musicology in Germany. In the course of the coming three years, the BSB and the SLUB thus will further expand their already established services.

The acquisition of subject-relevant literature and scholarly resources in printed and digital form is of central importance here, just as a broad variety of digital services for the subject field. The services established under the joint label musiconn. Musicology connected (www.musiconn.de) are continuously expanded and optimised. The provision and technical further development of the online catalogue of the Répertoire International des Sources Musicales (RISM Catalog) at the BSB forms part of this. Including over 1.5 million music sources, this reference instrument represents the most relevant database of its kind on a worldwide level.

Thanks to the online repository musiconn.publish of the SLUB, the FID Musicology has also become a constant in the field of digital publishing, offering researchers an option to publish their work free of costs, in open access and with a long-term storage guarantee. This service will be expanded continuously during the coming years, which is also applicable to the database for musical performance events musiconn.performance at the SLUB and the web application musiconn.scoresearch for searching melodies on the basis of optical note recognition at the BSB.

Moreover, the BSB continues its service for archiving musicologically relevant websites and the registration authority for musicological dissertation projects and expands the portal musiconn.libretto by full-text search and the inclusion of authority data.

A board made up of representatives from a wide spectrum of musicological institutions and an international Advisory Board additionally ensure continuous feedback to the FID Musicology with respect to its work and give new impulses for further developments which are oriented on the demands of scholarship.

All services and further information can be retrieved via the project's portal www.musiconn.de.
