Bayerische Staatsbibliothek opts for using Alma by Ex Libris for modernising its library services

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (BSB), Germany’s largest research and universal library, will migrate its library services to the cloud-based Alma® platform by Ex Libris. For almost 20 years, the BSB had used a local system that was becoming increasingly complex and meeting the limits of its performance capability. The transition to the cloud-based software as a service solution by Ex Libris, a company of the ProQuest group, is intended to significantly boost efficiency and user friendliness.

The BSB, one of the most renowned universal libraries in Europe, will use the Alma platform for managing printed, electronic and digital materials via one uniform interface. As a cloud-based solution, the Alma services will support the BSB in harmonising its workflows, offering an optimised user experience, considerably increasing efficiency and reducing costs.

"Extensive research and evaluations have shown that the right time has come for the transition to cloud-based library services", said Dr. Klaus Ceynowa, Director General of the BSB. "The decision to use the Alma platform by Ex Libris is an important step on the way to reducing complexity, further promoting the digitization of our services and even better preparing our library for the future. We are very glad about this transition and hope that our Alma implementation can be a model for future solutions in the overall Bavarian Library Network."

Ofer Mosseri, General Manager EMEA of Ex Libris and ProQuest, commented: "We feel honoured by the decision of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in favour of the Ex Libris Alma platform. Through its digital transformation the BSB takes its place among the group of top cultural institutions playing a pioneering role in Germany and Europe. Not only will the BSB achieve considerable increases in performance, but it will also become part of the global user community of Ex Libris and thus directly benefit from exchanging knowledge and experience with libraries worldwide."
