The obligation to protect the outstanding works of our cultural heritage and to preserve them for future generations means that we have to treat them with care in the present. Therefore, the collections held by the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books are available for consultation exclusively in the reading room of the department (non-lending collection).

The reading room offers 70 workplaces which are especially equipped for the consultation of old holdings, and a reference library with approximately 46,000 volumes. There are four PCs on which readers can access online catalogues,  databases and electronic journals. One PC with floppy drive and CD-ROM drive can be used for consulting the   CD-ROMs and DVDs available in the reading room. In addition, there are five reading devices for microfiche and microfilms.

Manuscripts and printed works held by the Manuscript Department need to be ordered by means of a yellow borrowing strip; please write the shelfmarks according to our  conventions. It usually takes half a day until the items are available for consultation. Special objects such as e. g. manuscripts kept in the safe, the most valuable printed works and items in a precarious state of conservation, are usually available in the form of photographic reproductions only. In the case of modern papers sometimes retention periods have to be adhered to. Also the state of conservation may render these materials available in a limited scope only. Please note that in the reading room only pencils may be used for writing.

Books from the general stacks can be ordered via the OPAC loan system to the manuscript reading room. Printed works published before the year 1700 are made available exclusively in the manuscript reading room. In the reading room  orders for photographic reproductions can be submitted, information about the  research done so far on the department's holdings is also available.

The reading room is fitted with a CCTV system for surveillance.
