Database of the Image Archive

The image archive of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek contains a collection of portraits and topographical views, the photographic archives of Georg Fruhstorfer, Heinrich Hoffmann, Bernhard Johannes and Felicitas Timpe, as well as several smaller, separate holdings.
  • Georg Fruhstorfer (1915 - 2003) primarily photographed events in Munich between 1946 and 1980.
  • The photographic archive Heinrich Hoffmann (1885 - 1957) contains materials concerning the NSDAP in the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Second World War and the first years of the post-war period. Some smaller contemporary-historical holdings were integrated, which primarily document the destructions of war and the reconstruction of Munich.
  • Bernhard Johannes (1848 - 1899) and his successors photographed buildings, locations and landscapes in the regions of the Werdenfelser Land (in Southern Bavaria) and Tirol (in Austria)
  • The photographic archive of Felicitas Timpe (1923 - 2006) centres on the scholarly, cultural and public life in Munich in the years 1951 to 2003.
  • As an architect employed by the Bavarian Administration of the State Gardens, Castles and Lakes (Bayerische Verwaltung der Staatlichen Gärten, Schlösser und Seen) Tino Walz (1913-2008) documented primarily the destruction and reconstruction of the Munich Residence in the years 1943 to 1949.
  • The collection of portraits and topographical views primarily contains sheets produced in original graphic techniques. It comprises portraits of scholars, musicians, authors, actors and regents from 16th to 20th century, as well as views of cities and important buildings (of primarily Bavarian origin).
The photographical archive Hoffmann is catalogued and digitized comprehensively. The other parts of the collection are catalogued and added to the image database by and by.

Each catalogue record in the database is linked to a thumbnail image. Higher resolution versions of the pictures are stored on a separate server and can be made available for publication.
