Cataloguing

The cataloguing division ensures that the acquired printed and digital media are catalogued and indexed uniformly, according to formal and subject-related criteria corresponding to the relevant rules and standards. The division is also in charge of setting up and maintaining the corresponding authority files. In the  Bavarian Library Network (Bibliotheksverbund Bayern - BVB) it is the central contact responsible for all cataloguing issues and contributes to the BVB, but is also active in (catalogue) editing work and work on rules and standards and authority files on a national level.

Since only a small part of the holdings of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is freely accessible to the users in the reading rooms, and the great majority is kept in partly closed stacks without systematic shelving, the majority of the media can be located and used exclusively via the online catalogue ( OPACplus) and other special reference tools (electronic databases, e. g. the  VD16) or also historical conventional catalogues such as the  Alter Realkatalog (Old Classified Catalogue) as well as special catalogue types such as the Bayerische Bibliographie (Bavarian bibliography). All cataloguing issues are therefore of special importance.

The speciality departments in charge catalogue the authors and titles of the centrally acquired monographic literature and subsequently enter subject headings. Periodicals (journals, yearbooks and newspapers) and electronic media are processed in the division Periodicals and Electronic Media (Zeitschriften und elektronische Medien - ZEM), i. e. they are catalogued when ordered or upon their delivery, and - in the case of the printed journal issues published more frequently than once per year - are displayed for the library users in a roughly systematic order in the periodicals reading room. The entry of subject headings is omitted. The electronic media, i. e. also the digital parallel versions of journals, are entered in the  Electronic Journals Library (Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek - EZB) in addition to a catalogue entry. The same is valid for the databases and other digital information resources, which are offered for use in the  Database Information System (Datenbank-Infostystem - DBIS) in a systematically summarized and clearly categorised fashion.

Centrally coordinated by the Cataloguing Division, the speciality departments of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek ( Orient and East Asia,  Eastern Europe,  Manuscripts and Early Printed Books,  Music,  Maps and Images) process the majority of their materials on their own authority.
