Classical Studies
Area of Collection Emphasis Classical Studies

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds one of the largest and most important collections in the field of classical studies on a world-wide scale, with historically grown holdings.

Since the beginning of the 1950s the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has fulfilled the function of a reference library for classical studies within the framework of the programme of supra-regional literature supply supported by the  Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft  (German Research Society). The basic idea of this system is that at least one copy of every scientifically relevant publication shall be available in Germany.

The Graeco-Roman Antiquity forms part of this area of collection emphasis from point of view of both location and time. The collection mandate encompasses general classical studies, antique history, classical philology as well as medieval and new Latin philology.
Non-literary texts of Antiquity and of the Middle Ages in the Latin language and the corresponding secondary literature also form part of the collection.

In these areas the BSB comprehensively purchases scientifically relevant books, periodicals and electronic media.

For more detailed information on the individual collections and on the support programme please consult the information system  webis 6.12.

The literature forming part of the area of collection emphasis of classical studies is contained in the   general catalogues of the BSB.
