Document Administration

The administration of the library's holdings is of fundamental importance. Since the library is a repository library, almost all books are kept shelved in closed "storage rooms". Currently our repositories contain nine and a half million volumes. If a line were formed of all the shelves, its total length would amount to over 186 miles. The total shelf length increases by around 2.5 miles annually. Despite electronic information transmission and modern conveyor technology, considerable distances have to be covered in order to collect books. The books are accommodated in the building at Ludwigstrasse, in storage rooms in the Euroindustriepark and in the two repositories in Garching. This decentralisation creates some inconveniences for our users and employees. Books are collected from the remote repositories twice per day, so that our users are provided with ordered items with as little delay as possible.
