Image Archive

In addition to a collection of portraits and topographical views (in a multitude of different techniques) the holdings of the Image Archive comprise parts of the photographic archives of Heinrich Hoffmann, Felicitas Timpe, Bernhard Johannes and Georg Fruhstorfer.
The photographic archive Hoffmann comprises mainly materials concerning the NSDAP in the Weimar Republic, the Third Reich, the Second World War and the first years of the post-war period (International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg etc.).
The photographic archive Timpe documents the academic, cultural and public life in Munich during the years 1952 to 2003, mainly in the areas of music, literature, fine art, theatre and television.
Bernhard Johannes (1848 - 1899) and his successors photographed buildings, locations and landscapes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the Werdenfelser Land (in Southern Bavaria) and Tirol (in Austria).

Georg Fruhstorfer (1915-2003) primarily photographed events in Munich between 1946 and 1980.
The collection of the Image Archive, which comprises a total of over 2 million items, is fully indexed in internal inventories. For further information please refer to the information desk in the Reading Room of the Map Collection and Image Archive.
The photographic archive of Heinrich Hoffmann is catalogued and digitized comprehensively. Other parts of the collection are successively processed and added to the  Database of the Image Archive for presentation to the public.
