Rules of the House

The use of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is in principle governed by the Allgemeine Benuetzungsordnung der Bayerischen Staatlichen Bibliotheken (General Regulations for the Use of the Bavarian State Libraries - ABOB) as amended on 18 August 1993 (GVBl [Law and Ordinance Gazette] p. 635).

The following Rules of the House additionally regulates how everybody should conduct themselves on the premises of the library.
The Director General exercises the householder's rights. He may entrust other employees of the library with the exercise of the householder's rights.
You must comply with the directions of the library staff. Whoever breaches the Rules of the House may be expelled from the premises and may be excluded from the use of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek temporarily or permanently.
 
1. Stay in the Library Building
Readers are not allowed to stay in the library building beyond the regular opening hours.
 
2. Conduct in the Library
Please adapt your conduct to the following principles
  • everybody has a right to pursue his legitimate claims without disturbance;
  • you must not obstruct anybody or expose anybody to danger;
  • the library's business must not be obstructed;
  • you must not damage books, other media or the facilities and equipment of the library.
Readers are liable for any damage caused by them.
 
3. Bringing Pets
Readers must not bring any pets with them.
 
4. Lockers
Please put away outdoor coats, anoraks, bags, briefcases, laptop bags, etc. in the lockers before entering the reading rooms, consulting the official catalogues and collecting books from the lending desk. The supervising staff's factual decisions concerning admissible clothes and bags are binding instructions. The lockers must be cleared daily before leaving the library. The library is not liable for the loss of any clothes or any other belongings of the readers.
 
5. Food, Drink, Smoking
You must not eat or drink in or bring any food or drink to the reading rooms, the issue and return area, the area of the catalogues and the exhibition areas. 
Smoking is forbidden due to legal requirements. You must not smoke anywhere  in the building including the stairs outside. 
 
6. Use of Personal Equipment
Laptops may only be used at the workplaces intended for this purpose. Mobile phones, audio devices (e. g. MP3 players) may be used in the entrance hall (not on the staircase!), in the locker area and in the cafeteria. Mobile phones must be switched off in all other parts of the building.
In the reading rooms you must not use any technical equipment of your own which is suitable for preparing reproductions. Such technical equipment encompasses cameras, digital cameras, camera phones, scanners, video devices, etc. If you wish to bring any other technical equipment, you must obtain prior special permission by the library.
 
7. Filming and Photographing
Prior special permission is required for taking photos and shooting films and TV coverage. In the case that library holdings are filmed, such permission is granted by the library department in charge, or, in the case that rooms or parts of the premises are filmed, by the Directorate.
 
8. Reserving Workplaces
You must not reserve workplaces in the reading rooms. Staff is entitled to assign workplaces which have not been used for an hour to other readers, regardless of books and/ or personal items placed on them. Such items are collected or moved to the side. The library does not accept any liability for damage or loss.
 
9. Guided Tours by Third Parties
Guided tours by third parties are allowed only upon prior written permission by the Abteilung für Benutzungsdienste (Department for User Services).
 
10. Posting of Bills or similar
Information materials may only be posted or displayed with the permission of the Directorate. Such materials must furthermore be posted or placed in the locations intended for this purpose.
 
11. Lost Property
Please hand in all lost property at the custodian's office. Uncollected lost property and all items removed from lockers which were not cleared in time are stored preliminarily and eventually put up for auction in accordance with the German Civil Code (Art. 987 ff. BGB).
 
12. Security Checks, Identification
The library is entitled to install control devices and to have the staff carry out security checks. Staff may in particular inspect any personal items brought along. You must show your reader pass and/or other valid identification to the library staff upon request.
 
13. Emergency Procedures, First Aid
Please note the posted leaflet "Verhalten im Brandfall" (emergency procedure in the case of a fire) and complementary information.
You can call an emergency physician or rescue service at any time from the custodian's office in the entrance hall, or phone the custodian to get help for you (extension: 2220). The custodian's office is occupied day and night.
