Registration

The online catalogue can be used for research purposes without prior formal registration.
To enter the  Reading Rooms you only need to bring your ID card or passport.

However, if you wish to take books or other media home or to a reading room on loan, or if you wish to obtain external access to licensed databases and electronic journals, or wish to use the Internet access of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, you need a reader pass with password. It is generally free of charge. Fees are only charged in the case of reservations (0,50 EUR), renewal reminders and lost loaned media as well as for special services you may commission, like e.g. photographs or copies.

For users from abroad wishing to use the collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek on the occasion of a brief visit there is a special  Registration Procedure.

Regular reader passes can be requested exclusively in person at the Registration Office (Zulassung) on the ground floor. Please bring either a valid identification card or a valid passport together with a confirmation of registration as resident (so-called Meldebestätigung) of your municipality. Students additionally need to bring a valid student ID card.

A preliminary registration can be carried out via an online form in the OPACplus. The preliminary registration provides you with a preliminary user number that can be used at once for up to five orders. However, before collecting the ordered media, the final reader pass must be collected from the Registration Office. In addition to the above-mentioned documents, also your preliminary user number is required for this purpose.
Students and employees of the Munich Ludwig-Maximilians University have to register with the university library first and cannot register with the BSB online.
