On 16 October 2006 the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek inaugurated the Reading Room Section for Research in the General Reading Room.

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is a library which first and foremost serves scholarly research. The research based on the collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek is of course paramount. However, the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek cannot fulfil this task any longer if it has become impossible for researchers to find seats in the General Reading Room due to its utilisation to full capacity.

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek has therefore reserved a section of the General Reading Room with 57 seats as Reading Room Section for Research. The number of seats was increased once again beforehand, and the equipment of the reading room was improved.
