RISM - RIdIM Munich branch office
The "Répertoire International dIconographie Musicale" (RIdIM) was founded in 1972 by representatives of three musicological/ academic organisations:
With the aid of this international network the indexing and cataloguing of representations of music in the fine arts (painting, graphics, etc., including handicrafts) is to be systematized and substantially expanded. Regarding its standards and organisation (structuring into individual Land groups) the research project orients itself on  RISM, the international catalogue of musical sources, which was founded already in 1952.
The Munich RIdIM branch office was founded in 1979 as a spin-off of the German working group of RISM at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Since then the branch office has been examining the holdings particularly of larger collections (museums and libraries) in Germany and cataloguing the relevant objects. Since 1989 the cataloguing has taken place with the aid of a database, which has been accessible online since December 2007 within the framework of the subject portal "Virtual Subject Library Musicology" of the BSB.
