The Classified Catalogue is a conventional card catalogue kept in boxes containing about 1 million titles from the processing year 1870 until the publication year 1952. It mainly records historical literature published from 1501 to 1952, acquisitions prior to 1870 not exhaustively. Geographical and topographical attributions take precedence for filing. In addition to monographs, the section on Bavaria also includes periodicals articles published from 1916 to 1952. The catalogue is subdivided into three parts:
- Geographical Section („Geographischer Teil“)
It is constituted of 25 groups defined by capital letters in alphabetical order, representing the European states followed by the five continents. It begins with Germany in general, followed by individual sections on Bavaria, Prussia and smaller German states according to the geo-political situation shortly before 1870. The classification for the countries is subdivided by numbers from 1 to 999 for particular aspects and usually followed by an alphabetical section of place names as well as topographical units. The contents of these alphabetical sections are not included in the online index, apart from entities with further subdivisions, such as bigger cities. - Historical Section („Historischer Teil“)
It covers historical literature pertaining to areas which do not correspond to the geo-political world order of about 1870 (such as Antiquity, World History, Cultural History and Religious History in general) as well as auxiliary disciplines for historical research, Geography, Judaism und Archaeology. Cultural History also includes literature on the history of Science and Technology. - Art Catalogue („Kunstkatalog“)
It contains art literature in general, works on genres and styles as well as on German art and artists. Art literature relating to all other countries is included in the Geographical Section.
The Index of the Classified Catalogue is available for online searches.

For further advice on the use of the catalogue please consult the introductory screen of the Index. Since 2001 current antiquarian acquisitions have been classified online and may be retrieved with the precise notations. For the majority of the titles however the catalogue must be consulted via the Information Desk on the ground floor. If possible, please verify in advance the notation(s) you require.
