The Department of Music is obliged to safeguard the outstanding works of our cultural heritage and to preserve them indefinitely for future generations. This mission requires differentiated rules for the use of the collection: The newer books and periodicals about music and the newer sheet music (without scores) are available for local lending.

The following parts of the collection may be consulted exclusively in the Music Reading Room: printed music with scores, comprehensive scores, facsimile editions, microforms, music sound carriers, handwritten sheet music, modern papers related to music, special holdings such as e. g. the historic performance materials of the Bavarian State Opera (shelfmark St.th.). Furthermore: all historic, rare and particularly valuable collections as well as all collections in a precarious state of conservation.

Handwritten sheet music and rare historic printed works are usually made available in the form of microfilms or other types of reproductions. The originals can only be consulted upon request. Handwritten sheet music and collections belonging to modern papers can be ordered in the Music Reading Room using white borrowing slips. Such materials have to be ordered in person, stating the purpose of consultation. If you wish to consult items stored in the safe or items belonging to modern papers we kindly ask you to inform us beforehand in writing. Please note that special legal regulations apply to the copying and reproducing of printed music under copyright protection.
