Manuscripts in the Spanish and the Portuguese Language

The shelf marks of the Codices hispanici (Cod.hisp.) 1 to 154 comprise 145 Spanish and Portuguese manuscripts of the 13th to the 19th century, among them more than two dozen medieval manuscripts. Among the most important items are the Libro del conoscimiento (Cod.hisp. 150) from the middle of the 15th century, and also the medieval Catalonian manuscripts (Cod.hisp. 51 - 69, 71, 72) form a significant part of the collection.

The shelving again took place according to size: the folios (Cod.hisp. 1 - 25) and volumes in quarto size (Cod.hisp. 26 - 41) are followed by different book sizes in irregularly recurring sequence. Numerous items were taken over from the Mannheim court library (primarily Cod.hisp. 13 - 16, 29, 40, 41, 51 - 72), others from the Passau court library (primarily Cod.hisp. 4 - 8, 10, 26), the Augsburg city library (Cod.hisp. 9, 18, 30), as well as from the collections of Petrus Victorius (primarily Cod.hisp. 19) and of Etienne Quatremère (Cod.hisp. 97 - 107) and from the monastery library of Polling (primarily Cod.hisp. 20, 21, 38).
