Manuscripts, Early Printed Books

The complete holdings of the Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books, also including modern papers, are only available for consultation in the  reading room of the department.

For the consultation of manuscripts and rare printed books you need a special reader pass valid for this department. The signature groups Inc., Rar., Res. and L.sel. in particular belong to the rare printed works. You can obtain your special reader pass from the information desk in the reading room for manuscripts and early printed books. Please present an official ID or passport and state the purpose of your research. The special reader pass is valid initially for one year and can be extended. Please bring your special reader pass with you upon every visit.

Concerning the early printed books (other works published between 1501 and 1700) the BSB reader pass is sufficient. You also need such a reader pass for using the reference library.

Kindly present your reader pass upon entering the reference library and the reading room and enter your name in the user journal laid out.

In the case that you do not live in the Munich area or that you wish to consult material which is not contained in our catalogues, we recommend that you announce your visit in writing a few days in advance:

The use of manuscripts and early printed books is regulated by sections 24-25 of the   Allgemeine Benuetzungsordnung der Bayerischen Staatlichen Bibliotheken (General Regulations for the Use of the Bavarian State Libraries - ABOB).
