Kompetenznetzwerk fuer Bibliotheken (KNB - Competency Network for Libraries)

The Kompetenznetzwerk fuer Bibliotheken (KNB) has been fulfilling supraregional tasks of the German library system in a decentralised manner since 1 January 2004. It was established in order to ensure crucial services for the overall library system.

In detail, the KNB has the following aims:
  • making a broad span of information and facts for planning and decision-taking available on a Germany-wide and Laender level,
  • identifying strategic priorities,
  • promoting the role of the libraries on an international level and fostering international relations,
  • fostering the libraries' potential for innovation and development.
The KNB is jointly financed by all German Federal Laender. It reports to the Hochschulausschuss der Kultusministerkonferenz (KMK) (University Committee of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs of the Laender of the Federal Republic of Germany).
