Information services and local lending

Information services
It is the task of the information services to offer competent consulting on the comprehensive collections and information resources of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. The employees of the subdivision "Information services and information leaflets" offer personal consultation at the three information counters of the library (on the ground floor, in the general reading room, in the periodicals reading room). Via our telephone enquiry service or our information service in writing (virtual information system QuestionPoint, e-mail enquiry service, mail, fax) users can obtain help and guidance from their homes or working places. As further subdivisions also the holdings checking service (checking request forms against the BSB's and the union catalogues) and the leaflet editorial office (drawing up information leaflets to be distributed on the premises) form part of the department.

The employees of the subdivision "Guided tours and user courses" are on the one hand responsible for introducing the users to the specifics of the library and instructing them how to use the catalogues and other electronic media, and on the other hand for presenting the library to the public through giving guided tours for delegations or (in the case of public events) the broad public. The guiding idea of information provision in all sectors mentioned above is to always foster the users' information competency, that is to help them to help themselves.

The speciality departments of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek have their own information staff to inform users about the special collections of these departments. These employees do not belong to the information services division.

Local lending (loaning media for use at home)
Books and audiovisual media can be loaned for use at home or in the reading rooms. For this purpose the library's own portal  OPACplus provides access to the catalogue of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and to the order and loan system. The catalogue research is freely accessible. For all other comprehensive self-service functions, such as ordering items subsequently to a search, checking one's user account, making reservations and extending loan periods a reader pass (incl. user number and password) is required (  reader registration).

The lending of works for use at home is handled at the local lending counters. The reader registration also belongs to the local lending division organisationally.

For information on lending items for use in the reading rooms please see reading rooms.
