Information about Munich

Munich is Germany’s third largest city and has a population of 1.5 million people. It is the capital of the German Federal State of Bavaria, located about 100 km north of the ‘Bavarian Alps’. Some information about Munich’s history is found in  WikiPedia.

Munich has much to offer to the visitor and the traveller. Its centre is the Marienplatz with the Townhall and the Frauenkirche (Cathedral of Our Lady) as the most famous building in the city centre. The Residenz was the former residence of the Bavarian Dukes, Electors and Kings. Today it is an interior decoration museum. The visitor of Munich can also enjoy a world-renowned opera house, the National Theatre and the ‘Gasteig’ which houses the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. The two large baroque palaces Nymphenburg and Schleissheim remind on Bavaria’s monarchy.

Munich has several unique art museums, among them the 'Alte Pinakothek', the 'Neue Pinakothek' and the 'Pinakothek der Moderne', all located in a museum quarter near the city centre. Other attractions are German’s largest science museum, the Deutsches Museum, the English Garden, the Olympic Park, the New Soccer Stadium and, of course, the Hofbraeuhaus.
