Digitisation of printed books published in the German-speaking countries in the 16th century

Start of project: February 2006
Funding:  German Research Foundation

The printed books of the 16th century catalogued in the VD 16 have been digitised since February 2006 within the framework of currently three DFG projects. As a rule, only one specimen per edition is digitised. The digital copies are catalogued in the VD 16 (each being allocated a VD 16 number), as well as in the "Bayerischer Verbundkatalog" (union catalogue of the Bavarian library network) and in the OPAC of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. URNs and URLs are updated once the material is digitised, and the corresponding data are updated in these catalogues. The VD 16 can also be used to determine, for digitisation projects of other libraries, such issues which have not yet been digitised or scheduled for digitisation by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek or other institutions (e.g. University and State Library Halle or Berlin State Library). Whenever printed books catalogued in the VD 16 are digitised, the VD 16 number must be stated, so that the URN/URL of these digital copies can be added to the VD 16. The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek should be informed about any printed books of the 16th century which have so far not been catalogued in the VD 16, so that such books can also be integrated in this bibliography. Currently full-text digital copies are catalogued for over 25,000 titles.
