Digitisation of Incunabula by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek

Start of project: 1 January 2008
Funding:  German Research Foundation

The Bayerische Staatsbibliothek holds the world's richest  collection of incunabula. The collection comprises approximately 20,000 copies of 9,742 editions.

The project encompasses the digitisation of one copy of each incunabula edition held by the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek and is financially supported by the German Research Foundation. Any overlapping with other projects for the digitisation of incunabula like the  VdIB (Verteilte digitale Inkunabelbibliothek: Distributed Library of digitized incunabula) is avoided. The digital copies of the incunabula are catalogued in the  BSB's Catalogue of Incunabula, in the  Incunabula Short Title Catalogue (ISTC) and the  GW (Gesamtkatalog der Wiegendrucke: Bibliography of books printed in the fifteenth century).

The project is the successor of a  project for the digitisation of graphic-art book illustrations of the 15th century carried out already in 1998 with the support of the DFG.
