Codices inconographici

"Codices iconographici - i.e. illuminated manuscripts with no text or merely explanatory text" is the name of a manuscript collection of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek which was established in the 19th century under J. A. Schmeller and described in a hand-written repertory. This handwritten catalogue was continued by the addition of further purchases until the year 2002. The holdings currently encompass almost 550 objects.

The codices, scrolls and broadsides contain representational illustrations from the areas of botany, zoology, geography, architecture, machinery and military equipment, costumes, heraldry and others, partly very matter-of-fact, partly magnificently decorative. The holdings comprise important works of art by Hans Mielich, Hans Burgkmair the Elder, Sebastiano Serlio, Joachim Sandrart, August Johann Roesel von Rosenhof, Friedrich Ludwig Sckell, Friedrich Gaertner and other architects who worked for King Ludwig I of  Bavaria, by the illustrator of children's books Herbert Pothorn and many others. The works were created in Germany, Italy, France and other European countries between the 15th and the 20th century, the focus of the collection being on the 16th to the 18th century.
