A retrospective national bibliography for the period from 1601 to 1700 is currently being compiled in the database of works published in German-speaking countries in the 17th century (abbreviated as: VD 17). The bibliography covers all German-language titles, and, regardless of their language, all works printed and published in the historical German-speaking countries. Printed music and maps are excluded.

The project is financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). Cataloguing was started on 1 July 1996, and the planned funding period is 10 to 12 years. The cataloguing and indexing of the collections of the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek was completed on 30 June 2005. The printed works are catalogued ‘copy in hand’ from the originals. The entries are supplemented with digital images of selected key pages of the printed works for better information and to enable the user to distinguish individual editions more easily.
